The agreement will open the doors to establishing partnerships

Unicamp's rector, Professor Paulo Cesar Montagner, signed a memorandum of understanding with York University (UY) in Canada on Monday night (29), a move that, according to him, could result in a series of collaborations in various areas. For Montagner, the memorandum will open the door to establishing partnerships and the institution of exchange programs, whether for professors, students or staff.

"This is a major achievement. UY is a major university, and this agreement could consolidate some discussions that were already underway," the rector revealed. "They have very interesting research areas that are ideal for engaging with us on various future projects," he added.

The agreement was signed by UY Rector Lisa Phillipps, who was at Unicamp for the general assembly of the Hemispheric University Consortium (HUC), a group of institutions formed in 2018 that brings together 13 universities from 12 countries. The rector expressed enthusiasm for the possibility of partnerships with Unicamp and assured that UY is open to collaborations.

Professor Rafael Dias, director of Unicamp's International Relations Department (DERI), said that Unicamp and York University have a strong relationship, which, he believes, is now deepened with the signing of the agreement. According to Dias, UY was one of the universities the Unicamp delegation visited in October 2024, during a trip to Canada. Over the course of a week, the group from Campinas visited McGill University, Polytechnique Montréal, and the Université de Montréal. They also visited the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, York University, and the University of Toronto.

"The memorandum is an acknowledgment by both institutions that there are enormous possibilities for collaboration in the areas of teaching and research, which can be explored from now on," said Dias.

The director explains that negotiations are already underway to begin multidisciplinary research in the Humanities and other fields. "We hope that students and faculty from our side and theirs can forge an even deeper partnership between the two universities. The idea, he says, is to intensify the exchange of faculty, researchers, staff, and undergraduate and graduate students; to explore opportunities for collaboration in areas of mutual interest, such as sustainability, urban studies, media/culture, and artificial intelligence. Furthermore, they discussed the possibility of creating a bilateral program to support research projects between the two universities.

The HUC assembly – which began on Monday (29) and ends this Wednesday (1) – was held at Unicamp and discussed topics such as sustainability, public health, bioeconomy and social inclusion.
