On Friday, June 6, 2025, the University of Campinas (Unicamp) received, through the Executive Directorate of International Relations (DERI), a delegation from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS). The visit aimed to strengthen academic relations between the institutions and promote research cooperation in the areas of social sciences and humanities.
The Chinese delegation was composed of researchers and leaders from CASS, the Institute of Latin American Studies, the Institute of Sociology and the University of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (UCASS). Zhao Rui, vice president of CASS, and Zhang Zhengwen, president of UCASS, were also present.
Activities began at 14 pm, with a guided tour of the CASS-UNICAMP Center for Studies on China and the César Lattes Central Library, led by Professor Tom Dwyer, from the Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences (IFCH) and Brazilian director of the center.
The Center for China Studies, created in 2019 in partnership with CASS, is one of the milestones of this collaboration, promoting interdisciplinary research and exchange between Brazilian and Chinese researchers.
They then attended an institutional meeting, where the Chinese delegation was welcomed by representatives of Unicamp, including the acting rector of Unicamp, Ana Maria Frattini Fileti, and Luana Mattos, international relations advisor. During the meeting, the signing ceremony of the student exchange agreement between the University of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Unicamp took place.
The day’s program concluded with the seminar “Exchange between civilizations: China and Brazil discuss the future of modernization,” held in the auditorium of the Institute of Computing. The event featured lectures by Zhu Di, director of the Research Office for the Sociology of Culture and Consumer Affairs (IS-CASS), who addressed the transformation of consumption in China. Liu Qi, assistant researcher and editor of the journal “Estudos Sociológicos” (IS-CASS), presented a study on women, care and environmental action in the context of Chinese modernization. The comments were led by Professor Tom Dwyer and Professor Leonardo Fontes, coordinator of the postgraduate program in Sociology at Unicamp.
